What is a tower crane?
A tower crane is a tall, fixed crane with a mast and jib that can lift and move heavy loads to great heights. It does not include a self-erecting tower crane. The jib can slew (rotate around a vertical axis), luff (move up and down) and trolley loads in and out. Tower crane work involves a boom crane or a jib crane (with horizontal or luffing jib) mounted on a demountable or permanent tower structure.
It is commonly used on high-rise construction sites for lifting steel, concrete, formwork and other building materials.
What does this licence allow me to do?
The CT high-risk work licence allows you to operate a tower crane from the cabin. The scope of work for this licence covers the operation of tower cranes. The scope of work for this licence does not include the operation of a self-erecting tower crane.
Does this licence cover other cranes?
No. The CT licence only covers tower cranes. To operate other crane types (such as mobile cranes, self-erecting tower cranes or non-slewing cranes), you must hold the appropriate high-risk work licence for that equipment.
Can I do this course without prior crane experience?
Yes. The course is suitable for both beginners and those with some crane experience. However, you will need to meet the course selection criteria, including holding a high risk work licence to perform dogging or the applicable dogging unit of competence, language, literacy, numeracy, and digital skills.
Do I get my licence immediately after the course?
Not immediately. After you successfully complete both the unit of competency and the WorkSafe licence assessment, you will receive a Notice of Assessment (NOA) by email. You must then lodge your NOA through the MyWorkSafe portal or at Australia Post within 60 days and pay the required licence fee. WorkSafe will issue the physical licence card after that process.
Can I do the course on weekends or part-time?
We may offer weekend or customised delivery options depending on availability and demand. If the standard 4-day course option do not suit you, talk to us — we’re happy to explore alternatives with you.
