What is a boom-type elevated work platform (EWP)?
A boom-type EWP is a powered machine that can lift people, tools and materials to work at heights. It has a boom structure that can extend, raise, lower and rotate to position the platform. Examples include truck-mounted EWPs, trailer-mounted EWPs, self-propelled boom lifts and cherry pickers. Boom-type elevating work platform means a powered telescoping device (including vertical and inclined), hinged device or articulated device or any combination of those devices used to support a platform on which persons, equipment and materials may be elevated to perform work, but does not include an industrial lift truck.
What does this licence cover?
The scope of work for this licence covers the operation of boom-type elevating work platforms that have a boom length of 11 metres or more.
Do I need this licence for smaller EWPs?
No. You only need the WP licence for boom-type EWPs with a boom length of 11 metres or more. To operate scissor lifts or smaller boom lifts under 11 metres, a WP licence is not required, but you must still receive training and instruction to operate them safely.
The EWPA Yellow Card Training Program is for people who need the skills and knowledge to safely operate Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs or EWPs). This course covers the safe use of different types of EWPs, including boom lifts under 11 metres. Participants can complete one or more modules, depending on the machines they will use:
We offer the Yellow Card course. Contact us for more details.
Can I do this course without prior EWP experience?
Yes. The course is suitable for both beginners and those with some experience. However, you will need to meet the course selection criteria, including language, literacy, numeracy, and digital skills.
Do I get my licence immediately after the course?
Not immediately. After you successfully complete both the unit of competency and the WorkSafe licence assessment, you will receive a Notice of Assessment (NOA) by email. You must then lodge your NOA through the MyWorkSafe portal or at Australia Post within 60 days and pay the required licence fee. WorkSafe will issue the physical licence card after that process.
Can I do the course on weekends or part-time?
We may offer weekend or customised delivery options depending on availability and demand. If the standard 2-day or 3-day options do not suit you, talk to us — we’re happy to explore alternatives with you.
