What is a non‑slewing mobile crane?

A non-slewing mobile crane is a mobile crane fitting these criteria:

  • The boom or jib cannot slew (i.e. it cannot rotate around a vertical axis); instead it can only luff (up/down) or telescope (in/out)
  • It includes:
    • Articulated mobile cranes (e.g., pick‑and‑carry / Franna)
    • Locomotive mobile cranes
  • It excludes vehicle tow trucks or cranes mounted on tow trucks

What does this licence allow me to do?

The CN high-risk work licence allows you to operate:

(a) non-slewing mobile cranes;

(b) reach stackers; and

(c) non-slewing telehandlers.

Once licensed, you can perform lifts in construction, logistics, mining, and other industries where slewing mobile cranes are commonly used. It also covers the use of crane attachments such as winches and jibs.

Can I drive an articulated mobile crane on public roads with a CN licence?

No. Competence in this unit and holding a CN licence do not allow for driving an articulated mobile crane on a main or public road. In order to drive on a main or public road, a valid heavy vehicle licence, issued by a transport regulator, is required.

Can I do this course without prior crane experience?

Yes. The course is suitable for both beginners and those with some experience. However, you will need to meet the course selection criteria, including language, literacy, numeracy, and digital skills.

Do I get my licence immediately after the course?

Not immediately. After you successfully complete both the unit of competency and the WorkSafe licence assessment, you will receive a Notice of Assessment (NOA) by email. You must then lodge your NOA through the MyWorkSafe portal or at Australia Post within 60 days and pay the required licence fee. WorkSafe will issue the physical licence card after that process.

Can I do the course on weekends or part-time?

We may offer weekend or customised delivery options depending on availability and demand. If the standard 4-day course option do not suit you, talk to us — we’re happy to explore alternatives with you.
