What is basic rigging?

Basic rigging involves the use of equipment and techniques to move, secure and support loads, as well as the erection and dismantling of certain structures such as hoists, mast climbers and safety nets. Riggers use mechanical load shifting equipment and associated gear to move, place or secure loads, including plant, equipment or members of a structure. Riggers ensure the stability of those members and set up and dismantle hoists.

What does this licence allow me to do?

The RB high-risk work licence allows you to:

  • Perform dogging work (slinging loads and directing crane operators)
  • Rigging work involving any of the following:
    • Movement of plant and equipment;
    • Steel erection;
    • Hoists (other than hoists with jibs and self-climbing hoists);
    • Placement of pre-cast concrete;
    • Safety nets and static lines;
    • Mast climbing work platforms;
    • Perimeter safety screens and shutters; and
    • Cantilevered crane loading platforms.

Does this licence allow me to perform rigging work other than what is listed above?

No. The RB licence only covers the basic rigging work listed above. To perform more complex rigging (such as rigging work involving dual lifts and demolition), you need to progress to an Intermediate Rigging (RI) or Advanced Rigging (RA) licence.

Can I do this course without prior dogging or crane or rigging work experience?

Yes. The course is suitable for both beginners and those with some experience. However, you will need to meet the course selection criteria, including holding a current licence to perform dogging, and having the required language, literacy, numeracy and digital skills.

Do I get my licence immediately after the course?

Not immediately. After you successfully complete both the unit of competency and the WorkSafe licence assessment, you will receive a Notice of Assessment (NOA) by email. You must then lodge your NOA through the MyWorkSafe portal or at Australia Post within 60 days and pay the required licence fee. WorkSafe will issue the physical licence card after that process.

Can I do the course on weekends or part-time?

We may offer weekend or customised delivery options depending on availability and demand. If the standard 4-day or 5-day options do not suit you, talk to us — we’re happy to explore alternatives with you.
