What is a bridge and gantry crane?

Bridge crane means a crane that:

  • consists of a bridge beam or beams, that are mounted to end carriages at each end, and
  • can travel along elevated runways, and
  • has one or more hoisting mechanisms arranged to traverse across the bridge.

Gantry crane means a crane that:

  • consists of a bridge beam or beams supported at one or both ends by legs mounted to end carriages, and
  • can travel on supporting surfaces or deck levels, whether fixed or not, and
  • has a crab with one or more hoisting units arranged to travel across the bridge

What does this CB licence cover?

The scope of work for this licence covers the following:

(a) the operation of bridge cranes and gantry cranes that are:

                                  (i)  controlled from a permanent cabin or control station on the crane; or

                                 (ii)  remotely controlled and have more than 3 powered operations;

                (b)  the application of load estimation and slinging techniques to move a load using a bridge crane or gantry crane.

Can I do this course without prior crane experience?

Yes. The course is suitable for both beginners and those with some experience. However, you will need to meet the course selection criteria, including language, literacy, numeracy, and digital skills.

Do I get my licence immediately after the course?

Not immediately. After you successfully complete both the unit of competency and the WorkSafe licence assessment, you will receive a Notice of Assessment (NOA) by email. You must then lodge your NOA through the MyWorkSafe portal or at Australia Post within 60 days and pay the required licence fee. WorkSafe will issue the physical licence card after that process.

Can I do the course on weekends or part-time?

We may offer weekend or customised delivery options depending on availability and demand. If the standard 4-day options do not suit you, talk to us — we’re happy to explore alternatives with you.
