Go Workplace Training | TLILIC0023 Slewing Mobile Crane Licence

High-risk work licence class – C6 – Slewing mobile crane operation licence (up to 60 tonnes)

If you’re looking to complete your C6 crane course in Melbourne, Go Workplace Training offers nationally recognised, WorkSafe-approved training at our Dandenong South facility. Our C6 crane licence course covers everything you need to operate a slewing mobile crane of up to 60 tonnes from pre-operational safety checks to complex lifts in live work environments.

Whether you’re entering the crane industry for the first time or formalising years of on-the-job experience, our 4-day crane operator course in Victoria gives you the practical skills and the nationally recognised unit of competency, required to apply for your WorkSafe High Risk Work Licence.

Go Workplace Training is one of Victoria’s most experienced Registered Training Organisations (RTO 22464), with over 20 years delivering high-risk work licence training to individuals and businesses across the construction, civil, mining, and logistics industries.

The C6 crane licence is a WorkSafe High Risk Work Licence (HRWL) that authorises the holder to operate a slewing mobile crane with a capacity of up to 60 tonnes. It is issued under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations (OHS) legislation and is legally required before operating this class of crane on any Australian worksite.

The C6 is one of the most widely held crane licences in Victoria. Slewing mobile cranes are commonly used across construction, infrastructure, mining, and heavy industry, making this course one of the most in-demand in the high-risk work sector.

The unit of competency behind the C6 licence is TLILIC0023 Licence to operate a slewing mobile crane (up to 60 tonnes). This unit is assessed both by your Registered Training Organisation (Go Workplace Training) and by a WorkSafe-approved assessor (C6 Licence Assessment) before your licence is issued.

The C6 licence allows you to operate:

  • Slewing mobile cranes with a capacity of 60 tonnes or less
  • Non-slewing mobile cranes (CN class)
  • Reach stackers
  • Vehicle loading cranes with a capacity of 10 metre tonnes or more (but does not include the application of load estimation and slinging techniques to move a load using a vehicle loading crane)
  • Telehandlers

This makes the C6 one of the most versatile crane licences available, covering a broader range of equipment than many operators realise. If you’re also researching CN crane courses in Victoria, it’s worth knowing that a C6 licence already includes non-slewing mobile crane operation.

Our C6 crane course in Melbourne is delivered over 4 days at our Dandenong South training facility, located at 16 Kitchen Road, Dandenong South VIC 3175, conveniently accessible from across Melbourne’s south-east and greater Melbourne region.

The course combines pre-study and homework before your 4 day face-to-face sessions, ensuring that class time is focused on theory review, hands-on, practical training. Our instructors are experienced crane operators and workplace trainers who bring real-world site knowledge into every session.

For those who need more flexibility, we also offer a 5-day face-to-face option, as well as the ability to discuss weekend delivery or customised scheduling. We understand that tradespeople and site workers have demanding schedules. Talk to us and we’ll do our best to find an option that suits you.

Upon successful completion of the unit of competency and the WorkSafe licence assessment, you’ll receive a Notice of Assessment (NOA), which you use to apply for your C6 licence through the MyWorkSafe portal or at Australia Post.

The crane industry in Victoria and across Australia, has a consistent and growing demand for licensed operators. Completing your crane licence course near you in Melbourne positions you for employment across construction, infrastructure, resources, and transport industries, where crane operators are consistently listed among the most sought-after tradespeople.

A slewing mobile crane is a crane fitted with a boom or jib capable of rotating (slewing) 360 degrees. These cranes are mounted on a mobile base, typically a wheeled or tracked chassis, allowing them to be driven to and positioned on site.

Slewing mobile cranes are among the most versatile and commonly used lifting machines in the construction and civil industries. They are used to:

  • Lift and position structural steel beams and columns
  • Place precast concrete panels and tilt-up construction elements
  • Install plant and equipment in industrial settings
  • Move heavy materials across large construction sites
  • Support civil works including bridge construction and infrastructure projects
  • Assist with demolition and remediation activities

The C6 licence covers slewing mobile cranes up to 60 tonnes, the class most commonly encountered on commercial construction, residential high-rise, and civil projects across Victoria.

What the C6 does not cover: If you need to operate cranes above 60 tonnes, you will require an additional licence. The C1 licence covers cranes up to 100 tonnes, and the C0 covers cranes over 100 tonnes. The C6 does not cover tower cranes, which require a separate CT licence class.

Our C6 crane course in Melbourne covers the full range of competencies required to safely plan, set up, operate, and shut down a slewing mobile crane in a commercial worksite environment. The course is designed to meet the requirements of the unit of competency and WorkSafe’s High Risk Work Licence assessment standards.

Course topics include:

  • Planning and preparing for crane work, including site assessment and lift planning
  • Pre-operational safety checks and equipment inspection procedures
  • Reading and interpreting load charts to calculate safe working loads
  • Selecting the appropriate crane configuration and lifting gear for the task
  • Identifying hazards in the work area and applying appropriate risk controls
  • Setting up the crane correctly, including outrigger placement and ground bearing calculations
  • Lifting, moving, and placing loads safely and in accordance with the lift plan
  • Using hand signals and two-way radio communication with doggers and riggers on the ground
  • Working with different load types, including suspended loads and awkward loads
  • Following OHS legislative requirements and WorkSafe regulatory standards
  • Responding to problems, equipment malfunctions, or unexpected site conditions
  • Parking and shutting down the crane safely at the completion of operations

By the end of the course (at the successful completion of the course requirements, including assessments), you will have the skills and knowledge to conduct safe crane operations in a range of worksite environments and the course completion documents needed to apply for your WorkSafe C6 High Risk Work Licence.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need prior crane experience to do this course?

No. The C6 crane course is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with existing experience. You do not need to have operated a crane before; our trainers will guide you through everything from the ground up. You will, however, need to meet the LLND entry requirements and be physically capable of undertaking the practical training.

How long does it take to get my C6 crane licence after the course?

After successfully completing the unit of competency and the WorkSafe licence assessment, you will receive a Notice of Assessment (NOA) by email. You then have 60 days to lodge your NOA through the MyWorkSafe portal or at Australia Post and pay the required licence fee. WorkSafe Victoria will issue your physical C6 licence card following that process. Processing times can vary, so we recommend lodging your NOA promptly.

Is the C6 the same as a CN crane course?

The C6 and CN are different licence classes. The CN licence covers non-slewing mobile cranes only. However, the C6 licence is broader. C6 licence holders are also authorised to operate non-slewing mobile cranes, meaning you do not need a separate CN licence if you hold a C6. If you are researching CN crane courses in Victoria and your goal is to operate slewing cranes as well, the C6 may be the better investment.

Can I do the crane course on weekends or part-time?

Standard delivery is a 4-day block (or 5-day option). However, we may be able to offer weekend or customised scheduling depending on your learning needs, demand and availability. Contact us to discuss your situation; we're flexible where we can be.

Does the C6 licence cover cranes above 60 tonnes?

No. The C6 only covers slewing mobile cranes up to 60 tonnes. To operate cranes above 60 tonnes, you will need the C1 (up to 100 tonnes) or C0 (over 100 tonnes) licence. If you're unsure which class you need for your work, talk to us and we can advise.

What is the difference between a C6 and a C1 crane licence?

The C6 covers slewing mobile cranes up to 60 tonnes. The C1 extends that to 100 tonnes. In practice, C6 covers the majority of cranes encountered on commercial construction sites in Melbourne and Victoria. The C1 and C0 are typically required for heavy civil, infrastructure, and large-scale industrial projects.

Is Go Workplace Training a registered RTO for crane training in Victoria?

Yes. Go Workplace Training is a nationally registered RTO (RTO 22464) and WorkSafe-approved training provider. We have been delivering high-risk work licence training in Victoria for over 20 years. Our C6 crane training is delivered in compliance with the national training framework and WorkSafe Victoria's licensing requirements.

Where is the crane course held?

Our C6 crane course is delivered at our Dandenong South training facility at 16 Kitchen Road, Dandenong South VIC 3175. This location is accessible from across Melbourne's south-east, including Dandenong, Pakenham, Cranbourne, Frankston, and surrounding areas.
