Forklift Driver - 10 point Safety Tips

Our regular readers know that we often write about safety, because safety comes first. Herewith we have prepared a 10 point basic safety tips for Forklift Drivers.

Forklift operation is an important job that comes with a set of responsibility and tight deadlines. At times we may find ourselves running behind with backlog of work and it may easily build the state of stress. In such times forklift operator is more likely to make a mistake and specifically when the forklift operator is new to the job. How do we keep our ‘cool’ in such situations? Well, the best way is to build the habit of following the safety checks and over the time it will come easily even in stressful times. Here is your 10 point safety Tips list:

1) Forklift operator must watch where they place hands and feet while operating a forklift. Be aware of pinch points such as wheels and lift gears.

2) Develop a habit of staying under the overhead guard and keep your hands and feet inside the cabin area.

3) In event if your truck starts to tip over, DON NOT JUMP. It is best that you stay in your seat and grip the wheel securely and support your balance with your feet.

4) Look, Look and Look. You should always look out for other when moving and operating your forklift. Remember, your warehouse or factory may have new recruits, visitors and temp staff who are likely to make a mistake and come in your way due to their little or no knowledge about the facility and surroundings. So always look for blind intersections and drive slowly.

5) Never walk on stand under the raised forks.

6) You should never allow anyone to ride with you on forklift unless your truck is made fore more than one person. Similarly, forklifts are not elevators so do not lift anyone unless you are using a special basket.

7) Do not let unauthorized persons operate your forklift even if they say they know how to operate the forklift. The training and licensing requirements are there for a reason – safety of yourself and others around your truck.

8) Always use horn when at intersections, backing up or when going through doors. In short, it is good to develop a habit to horn when you have limited or blocked vision.

9) Before you operate the forklift always first check that warning lights and backup alarms work.

10) Please keep in mind that you are controlling the forklift and you can stop disasters from happening with a little extra attention to safety matter.
